Publish Date/Time:
04/04/2012 - 11:03

It was unsurprising to see that the Office of Fair Trading has chosen to refer the private healthcare market to the Competition Commission.

The full OFT report is here: I have copied the executive summary below for quick reference.

Editorial Sunday 1 April 2012: Andrew Lansley in 'not Edith Piaf' shock

Publish Date/Time:
04/01/2012 - 13:56

Health Policy Insight can exclusively reveal that Andrew Lansley (saviour, liberator) is not the reincarnation of Edith Piaf.

Specifically, this is because in a spirit contrary to La Môme's infamous song of defiance, Our Saviour And Liberator has a regret.

The Maynard Doctrine – A pause for thought

Health economist Professor Alan Maynard offers some reflections on the current state of transition in the NHS.

Some items to ponder in the bath, or whilst Eastenders or Match of the Day are on TV, or wherever you think about the enigmas and quaint old NHS fashions that continuously entertain us.

Editorial Thursday 29 March 2012: The replumbing of power

Publish Date/Time:
03/29/2012 - 09:24

We have builders with us at the minute, which is always a good laugh. Seeing right into the DNA of how your house works is disconcerting, particularly when you find a live water pipe down the middle of a wall you're removing.

Houses live on electricity and water, coursing around it like blood and oxygen. (Gas isn't networked in the same way, usually going to only two points - boiler and kitchen hob).

When water leaks, it can fuck a house up spectacularly.

Awesome timing was on show by whoever leaked the NHS Bill transition risk register and the business case to Dr Phil Hammond, who put them up on his website.

The risk register was also sent to Roy Lilley, who published it at his NHS Managers website.

Publish Date/Time:
03/26/2012 - 10:06

I come late and very sadly to the news that Steve Collins died suddenly at the start of this month.

I found out thanks to this moving blog about Steve by the lovely Yvonne Coghill of the NHS Institute's Breaking Through programme, highlighted on Twitter by HSJ editor Alastair McLellan.

Guest editorial Friday 23 March 2012: Valedictory

Publish Date/Time:
03/23/2012 - 18:16

Irwin Brown of the Socialist Health Association signs off in the last of his series of guest editorials, looking at the skirmishes won in a lost war.

It has been a depressing time dealing with the hated H&SC Bill. We had the better arguments, better advice, and better lawyers - and at the end we had all the support - but it was never enough to overcome political expediency.

Editorial Friday 23 March 2012: Nick Clegg didn't refuse to kill Health Bill after PM threat to make a Lib Dem Health Secretary

Publish Date/Time:
03/23/2012 - 13:01

Yesterday I read and retweeted this blog piece by the New Statesman's political editor Rafael Behr, which claims that Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was dissuaded by PM That Nice Mr Cameron from putting the Health Bill out of its misery during the 'pause'.
